Kumamoto prefecture’s brand of rice ‘‘Mori no Kuma-san’’ (‘‘The Little Forest Bear’’)
When the well-known Japanese writer Mr. Natsume Soseki lived in Kumamoto, he described the city amid its lush greenery as the “forest city of Kumamoto”. This special A-grade grain was named ‘‘Mori no Kuma-san’’, or ‘‘The Little Forest Bear’’, using Japanese wordplay to mean that it was “born” in “Kumamoto”, the “forest city”. The slim grains form glutinous and very delicious rice.
