Nihonbashi is believed to have been the origin of ‘The Five Routes’, five key roads which connected Tokyo to the rest of Japan during the Edo period, as well as being the starting point of the National Highway established in the beginning of the Meiji period. Now, the center of the bridge’s roadway features Japan’s Kilometer Zero, the national starting point for distance. There is a replica of the marker in the Kilometer Zero Plaza, located to the northwest of the bridge.

A vast park created from a section of the Imperial Grounds was opened to the public in 1949. In addition to the historical features such as the Sakurada Gate, the flora and fauna highlight the best of each season in Spring the Yoshino Cherry Trees bloom, and in Winter many migratory birds come to the Garden.
