Japanese Garden Public Bath

The 120-meter square grounds that this hotel is built on were named “Heiankyo Sakyo-Shijo Sanbo-Kyucho” in the Heian Period (794-1192) and formed the site of Senior Minister of State Fujiwara-no Saneyoshi’s residence. In later years it was renamed Sanjo Karasuma Gosho (palace) and Sanjo Minami-den (south palace). In 1987, the site of a Japanese garden built in the Heian Period was excavated by Kyoto City Archaeological Research Institute, revealing landscaping stones of various sizes, artificial islands and small round pebbles from the bed of an yarimizu (artificial narrow stream). The hotel’s “Yarimizu Garden” you are free to enjoy is a replica of this Heian era garden.
